Attracted by the Pink Umbrella at Grasse　- 　oil painting by Harumi Kiyota
 
南仏ニースから電車とバスを乗り継いて１時間半ほど、降り立った瞬間に目に飛び込んで来る無数のピンクの傘のライン。此処は６０以上の工場を持つ香水の街グラースです。
 
その中の一つ老舗フラゴナールは、1926 年にパリの元公証人ウジェーヌ フックスによって設立され、それ以来、1841 年に調香師クロード モットによって建設された市内最古の工場の 1 つに設置されています。会社の名前は、地元の画家ジャン＝オノレ・フラゴナールから名付けられました。彼の絵も飾られていますが、画家としても技術が高くてびっくり 元々グラースは羊のなめし革製品の産業が盛んで、フラゴナール自身も宮廷の手袋職人兼調香師の息子でした。当時なめし革の手袋を外した後も臭いが残る事が問題視されていて、その対策にオレンジや花の香りを定着させて販売した所大ヒット。フラゴナールは 2 つの香水を発売して成功を収めた後、1936 年にスクライブ通り9 にパリ初のブティックをオープンしました。
 
同社は、5,000 年以上も遡る香水の歴史を思い起こさせる珍しい品物を展示する無料の博物館で あるパルファム博物館 (パリ)を所有しています。
ミュージアムでは、香水の歴史が展示されていて、エジプト時代にはミイラの臭い消しに使われていたと想像出来る、香水の蒸留の様子が壁画にもなっている事の驚きました。ローマ時代になると、香水を入れるガラス製の瓶が既に存在したりと、香水は貴重で有りながら五感を楽しむ人々の歴史を知りました。
 
ジャスミン、ラベンダー、オレンジ、バラ、カモミールなどなど、地域によって花の栽培も異なりますが南仏からイタリアにかけてはお花の栽培が盛んで、ここグラースに集めるには都合が良かったと思われます。
 
この地区のジャスミン栽培の殆どがシャネルの5番の製造に使われているとの噂もありますが、香水店オリジナル製品も多く、ある店では私達が日本からだと知ると、Sakuraの香水や、男性用に作られたSamuraiなどを紹介してくれましたが、香水は飛行機に持ち込め無いので、フラゴナールで石鹸を購入する事にしました。日本では高島屋で購入可能だそうです。
とっても有意義な1日を過ごせました
 
It takes about an hour and a half to get off the train and bus from Nice in the south of France, and the moment you step out, you are greeted by a line of countless pink umbrellas. This is Grasse, the city of perfume with over 60 factories.
One of these, the long-established Fragonard, was founded in 1926 by former Parisian notary Eugène Fuchs, and has since been located in one of the city's oldest factories, built in 1841 by perfumer Claude Motte. The company's name comes from local painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard. His paintings are also on display, and I was surprised at how skilled he was as a painter. Grasse was originally a thriving sheepskin leather industry, and Fragonard himself was the son of a glove maker and perfumer for the royal court. At the time, there was a problem with leather gloves lingering even after they were taken off, so to address this issue, they infused them with orange and floral scents and sold them, which became a huge hit. After launching two successful perfumes, Fragonard opened its first Paris boutique at 9 Rue de Scribe in 1936.
The company owns the Musée du Parfum (Paris), a free museum that displays rare items that evoke the history of perfume dating back more than 5,000 years.
The museum displays the history of perfume, and I was surprised to see a mural showing the distillation of perfume, which I imagine was used in Egyptian times to deodorize mummies. I learned about the history of people who enjoyed perfume with their five senses, as glass bottles for perfume already existed in Roman times.
Jasmine, lavender, orange, roses, chamomile, etc. Flower cultivation varies depending on the region, but it is thriving from southern France to Italy, so it seems convenient to collect them here in Grasse.
It is rumored that most of the jasmine grown in this area is used to make Chanel No. 5, but there are also many original products from perfume shops. When one shop found out we were from Japan, they introduced us to Sakura perfume and Samurai, which is made for men, but since perfume cannot be brought on an airplane, we decided to buy soap from Fragonard. Apparently it can be purchased at Takashimaya in Japan.
It was a very meaningful day.
