Flowless -　mixed media by Shunsetsu Okawa
 
自ら生け花として生けた花材を廃棄せず自分で炭化して、色彩を生けた後に出現した様々な黒及び変貌した質感を用いてモノクロームの世界をRE-CREATIONしています。
 
出身地群馬県オリジナル蚕品種の絹糸で着物を仕立てたことをきっかけに選除繭（着物に使用する上質な絹糸には向かない繭）があることを知り、人生初の真綿づくりに挑戦しました。できあがった真綿は１枚１枚表情が異なりそれは炭化植物の出来上がりと全く同じでした。 自分ではコントロールできない様々な要因によって生まれた唯一無二の炭と真綿を使用して制作しました。

Rather than discarding the flowers I used in my ikebana arrangements, I carbonize them myself, recreating monochrome worlds using the various blacks and altered textures that emerge after arranging the colors.
 
After making a kimono using silk thread from an original silkworm variety in my hometown of Gunma Prefecture, I learned about selected cocoons (cocoons that are not suitable for the high-quality silk thread used in kimonos), and for the first time in my life, I tried making silk floss. Each piece of silk floss had a unique appearance, just like the finished carbonized plant.
I created these works using unique charcoal and silk floss, created by various factors beyond my control.
 
Materials Used
- Homemade Silk Floss: Selected cocoons from Gunma Prefecture's original silkworm variety (Gunma 200)
- Homemade Carbonized Plants: Charcoal made from plants I used in my ikebana arrangements, instead of discarding them.
